5 Must-Have Qualities of an Animator

As with any other profession, to stay at the top as an animator requires some important qualities. These are qualities you should look out for when hiring an animator for any purpose whatsoever.

Dosunmu (2019) in his article, Who is an Animator? defined an animator as “ an expert who uses special computer programs or software to build two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) images for websites, games, movies and other multimedia platforms. An animator designs images and turns them into frames. He then uses some software to create an illusion of movement. These movements are what we refer to as animation.”

So, to stay at the top of your game as an animator, it becomes essential to take cognizance of certain qualities. They are briefly discussed below.

Educational Credentials

It is important to learn the necessary skills needed to be a successful animator. You must be knowledgeable in the use of creative software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Modo, Softimage, and AutoCAD.  This can be learned at a university while studying design or computer engineering. It is important to be knowledgeable in all the necessary technical know-how of the process of animation.

Creativity

The importance of creativity in the creation of animations cannot be overemphasized. Ve (2017) in her article, Top 5 Qualities of a Good Animator, stated that “ creativity is a prerequisite for being a good Animator.” Evidently, a creative animator can combine coloring, perception, shading acumen, and proper motion with dexterity.

Sense of responsibility

Glassdoor Team (2021) in their article, The Importance of Work Responsibility and How to Achieve More, asserts that “ responsibility is important in the workplace because it shows professionalism, can advance your career, helps build professional bonds with co-workers, and shows company leadership that you are a valuable employee.”

A sense of responsibility is a very important aptitude for working as an animator. Many people are involved in the production of animations. If one task is delayed, subsequent tasks that should be carried out would also be affected. Therefore, it is very vital to keep to delivery dates.

In the production of animation, there is a movement called ‘drawing collapse’.  It is the responsibility of a good animator to ensure that this does not occur. It is necessary to draw pictures that follow the laid down plans and story properly without doing haphazard work. This sense of responsibility is a very important quality of an animator.

Top-notch drawing skills

A good animator must have a good command of art and sketching. He must have the ability to draw accurately and provide quality designs for clients. The ability to draw accurately has a direct impact on the quality of animation that will be created.

Perseverance

Robinson (2012) in his article, Why is Perseverance Important? defined perseverance as “determination at working hard regardless of any odds or obstacles that may exist. It is to insist and to be firm on getting something done and not giving up.”

It takes a lot of perseverance to be a good animator. A good animator sits for hours to create impeccable frames. Even though it is fun, the process of animation is also very tiring, time-consuming, and tedious. It takes a lot of concentration and dedication to complete a task.

However, if you have perseverance as quality, then you are good to go. And since patience is also an important aptitude to keep up with your daily efforts, you can work hard to improve yours as long as you have it.
